First mentioned in the 11th century Bolgheri remained quite an anonymous wine region until 1974 in which Decanter magazine arranged the event that introduced to the world one of the future Bolgheri Superiore wines Sassicaia made of international grapes that left behind the assortment of the Bordeaux wines. Such a success made it evident that a high-standard production process in this area could give the wines comparable to renown French wines. Until that moment only white table wines and rosés had been produced here.
The success of Sassicaia motivated other winemakers to imitate the production process to get similar results and only 20 years later, in 1994 the DOC regulation was approved for these red wines giving them the acknowledgement that they deserved. Until that moment all the Bolgheri Superiore wines were sold as simple table wines. Over the last 30 years the Bolgheri wine region has become an expanded wine production area with world fame having broken the image of an unimportant area of stony and clay soils and maritime influence that was considered an obstacle for high-quality wine making. What makes these wines so particular compared to other Tuscan wines is the fact that they must be made of international grapes rather than the typical grapes of the area to be called DOC wines.
Before or after your wine tasting experience you might enjoy a walk around the village of Bolgheri with its traditional stone and brick houses, family-run shops and cute restaurants offering local specialties.
Small group Bolgheri wine tours start from Florence while the day trips with private drivers have no fixed pick-up/ drop-off locations. The ride from Florence or Siena will last about 1h 45m after which you will arrive at the first winery in the Bolgheri wine region to begin your wine tasting experience. Around noon you will get to the second winery where you will have an estate tour, wine tasting and a delicious lunch provided by the host. The village of Bolgheri can be visited either before or after visiting the vineyards depending on your itinerary. Being small in size it is the perfect place for a short walk. For those who come here for the shore excursion from Livorno or day tour from Lucca it’s highly recommended to visit the jewel of Italian architecture Pisa with its world-famous leaning tower and the Square of Miracles. On request we can provide a Driver Guide who is a professional chauffeur as well as a fully licensed tour guide, he will accompany you everywhere during your visit making it very informative and interesting. We also have available two Driver/Sommeliers in case you desire top level wine information and support.
